At the moment, one of the promising technologies for processing of wet biomass and organic waste to produce liquid fuel is hydrothermal liquefaction. Hydrothermal liquefaction is a thermochemical process, the main target products of which are liquid petroleum products and biochar. Contaminated wastewater and the gas phase can be considered as by-products. This article presents the results of studies assessing the volume and composition of the gas phase formed during the hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass of macroalgae, reeds, food waste, excess sludge and sewage sludge. It has been shown that at a temperature of 240–280°C the volume of the gas phase from all studied types of raw materials does not exceed 9 % (by weight). Upon closer examination of the average composition of the gas phase, it can be noted that the main identified components of the gas phase are carbon dioxide (up to 54,4 %), nitrogen and nitrogen-containing compounds (up to 46,7 %), the share of other flammable gases accounts for no more than 1 %. An interesting fact is that when processing biomass rich in proteins, higher concentrations of nitrogen-containing compounds are observed, formed during the deamination of proteins. The predominant organic components of the gas phase are alkenes (propylene and propadiene), propane and methane. The total calculated heating value of gas from food waste and cellulosic biomass processing does not exceed 99 J/g; when processing excess sludge, a more high-calorie gas phase is formed — 514 J/g. Small volumes of gas formation (up to 9 %) and the low calorific value of the resulting gas phase allow us to speak with confidence about the lack of feasibility of using the resulting gas phase as an energy source.
