<abstract xml:lang="ru">

The article examines the evolutionary development of the science of hydraulics, from ancient times to the present day. During the research, the achievements and discoveries of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, and Chinese were analyzed. Also, special attention in the article is paid to the discovery of water hammer, the problems and difficulties that accompanied the justification of this phenomenon and the modern vectors of its development. Over all the years of evolutionary development, the science of hydraulics has led to the creation of a reliable and efficient form of hydropower, which has found its wide application in various spheres of modern life. Hydraulic systems provide ten times more power than an electric motor, making them extremely useful for lifting and moving heavy objects. Precision mechanics allow hydraulics to be safer than electricity. This set of progressive advantages has led to the popularity of hydraulics and its widespread use in construction, shipping and manufacturing. Along with hydraulics, knowledge about water hammer also developed. Nowadays, the discussion around this topic has expanded significantly and beyond the calculation of pressure surges resulting from the rapid closing of valves, the central problems associated with water hammer problems cover various dichotomies, including single-phase and multiphase flow, laminar and turbulent flow, elastic and viscoelastic behavior of pipe materials under load.
