<abstract xml:lang="ru">

Microplastics are a new type of pollutants that enter the human body, including through drinking water. In this regard, ensuring the effective removal of microplastics from water sources is of particular importance. It has been established that microplastics pose a potential threat to human health, as they can accumulate in the body, cause inflammatory processes and have a negative impact on the immune, endocrine, reproductive, nervous and digestive systems. In this article, the authors consider the use of polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and chitosan (CTS) to remove microplastics from water. During the experiment, the use of these flocculants in water purification systems aimed at removing particles of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), one of the most common pollutants, was investigated. The PAC+CTS system has demonstrated higher efficiency compared to the traditional PAC system, especially in neutral and alkaline pH conditions. Experiments have shown that the combination of these two flocculants significantly improves the flocculation process, resulting in denser and more voluminous flocks that contribute to more efficient deposition of microplastics. The flocculation mechanism included both charge neutralization with Al3⁺ ions and the reinforcing effect of chitosan amino groups, which promoted the adsorption of microplastic particles and the formation of chemical bonds. The effect of pH on the efficiency of the process showed that optimal results were obtained at pH 9–11. This approach has proven its environmental safety by reducing the dosage of traditional chemical flocculants and providing more stable and efficient water treatment. The work is important for the development of environmentally friendly methods for combating microplastics, which is of practical importance for improving the quality of water resources.
