Over the half-century period of work on the problem of microplastic pollution of the waters of the world's oceans and land, various methods of sampling, as well as their further preparation for analysis, have been tested. The expansion of the studied plastic particle size ranges into the nanoregion has added methods for sampling nanoplastics from natural and drinking waters with subsequent or simultaneous sample preparation for analysis. Despite the lack of uniform global standards for methods of working with micro- and nanoplastics, researchers use guidance documents (recommendations) adopted in individual regions and countries, as well as developments published in hundreds of scientific publications. This paper analyzes the main, most common methods of sampling containing micro(nano) plastic from sea, surface and drinking waters, as well as the main methods of preparing samples for analysis. The authors presented data on surface (0–20 cm) and subsurface
(1–6 m) sampling methods used when working with sea and fresh waters, as well as on the recommended combination of these methods. The mesh samplers used in the first version are described, their capabilities in terms of volume, time, and efficiency of microplastic sampling depending on the size of the cells. The equipment used for subsurface sampling, as well as methods (for example, volumetric point sampling) and requirements for equipment and containers when sampling submicroplastics and nanoplastics are presented. The authors reviewed the four main sample preparation methods for microplastic analysis-sieving, filtration, purification from (bio)organic impurities, and density separation- with a more detailed discussion of the reagents and conditions for the latter two methods; and with examples of the use of membrane filtration in the fractionation of nanoplastics.
