<abstract xml:lang="ru">

      <trans-abstract xml:lang="en">

The article examines the complex relationships between climate change, economic sustainability and transformation of society. The author analyzes the limitations of classical economic theories, such as William Nordhaus’s DICE model, which focus on market mechanisms but ignore behavioral, institutional, and sociocultural factors. It is emphasized that climate shocks have a
non-linear impact on the economy, exacerbating global inequality: developing countries suffer significantly more, leading to an increase in climate migration. Particular attention is paid to alternative approaches, including Elinor Ostrom’s institutional economics, which demonstrates the effectiveness of polycentric governance and local practices, such as traditional water management systems in Burkina Faso. Behavioural economics, in turn, explains irrational decisions, such as resistance to the transition to green technologies in coal-mining regions. The author cites examples of successful strategies, such as the energy transition in Germany and water management in the Netherlands, where a combination of technological innovation, social trust, and institutional memory ensured sustainability. However, it is emphasized that universal solutions are not applicable: in the countries of the Global South, the effectiveness of measures depends on taking into account local cultural and historical characteristics. The conclusion is made about the need to synthesize various approaches — from neoclassical tools to behavioral «nudges» and the revival of local practices. The role of international cooperation and the formation of «trust ecosystems» in overcoming climate challenges is emphasized. The article proposes to rethink economic theory, including natural capital and social factors in order to ensure sustainable development in the context of global change.
